Lao Web Entrepreneur Delivers Talk on Social Networking
Jan. 31, 2012
Sounay Photisane delivers his presentation about social networking sites at the U.S. Embassy Jan. 31
On Jan. 31 2012 the U.S. Embassy in Vientiane hosted a presentation on social networking tools by Mr. Sounay Photisane, a 27 year old blogger, web designer, and lecturer at Mahasarakham University in Thailand.
The presentation entitled “Unlock the Power” was attended by more than 40 students and young professionals from colleges and IT-focused vocational schools in Vientiane. The event was sponsored by the Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section.
Sounay’s presentation provided an overview of the changing landscape of modern media, both globally and in Laos. The main force driving the change is the proliferation of social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Linked In, Word Press, and many more. These sites are different from traditional media because they promote conversationa dn dialogue, rather than one-way transmission of information.
Sounay, who grew up in Vientiane and plans to return to work in Laos soon, is the creator of a website devoted to Lao news and culture (www.vientianehour.com), and a blog devoted to technology and media (www.sounay.com).
Sounay encouraged the audience at the presentation to utilize social networking sites to build their business and professional networks. He pointed out that although Laos has a relatively small number of internet users compared to other ASEAN countries, the number is growing every day. He also pointed out that Laos will be the first country in ASEAN to have 4G service available.
At the end of the presentation the audience engaged Sounay in a lengthy conversation about freedom of expression on the internet, how Lao people use facebook and other social media, and various other topics. They also encouraged Sounay to hold more workshops and presentations in the future, to continue to educate Lao people about the many possibilities 21st century media offers.
