Lao-American Reading Center Opens in Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang Vice Governor
Mr. Khampheng Xaysompheng and Public Affairs Officer James Warren at
the Grand Opening of the Lao-American
Reading Center.

The Embassy’s second American Corner was officially opened on April 4 at a ceremony hosted by Public Affairs Officer James A. Warren and Luang Prabang Vice Governor Khampheng Xaysompheng. Located in Luang Prabang, the largest city in northern Laos, the American Corner is situated inside the city’s public library, where it can be easily visited often by students and the general public. The opening ceremony and reception were attended by more than 50 guests, including government officials, librarians, and teachers, who will return with their colleagues and students. In their opening remarks, the PAO and the head of the Library emphasized the importance of education for individuals and the country, and noted how the resources in the Corner will help people in northern Laos acquire English language skills; learn more about international issues such as trafficking in people and narcotics, protection of the environment, and democracy and human rights; and acquire information about American people, society, values, and government policies.
