Avian Influenza Military Training

The United States Pacific Air Force and the Lao National Avian and Human Influenza Coordinating Office (NAHICO) co-hosted our third Avian Influenza (AI) training program for members of the Lao military November 17-19 in Luang Prabang. This was our third military-military Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) focused on AI, and the first held outside Vientiane. Previous SMEEs were held in August 2007 and January 2008. Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Peter Haymond represented the Embassy at the opening ceremony, and Embassy Infectious Disease Coordination Office personnel supported the training for forty trainees representing provincial-level military officers and health officials. Ministry of National Defense (MND) Medical Department Director General COL Dr. Bounteun Bandavong was the senior MND official at the SMEE. The NAHICO team was led by Deputy Director Dr.Somphanh Chanphengsay.
