Mr. Maykong Phonphommavong, Head of
the Department of Agriculture and
Forestry of Huaphan Province and

World Education/Consortium sign the
Memorandum of Understanding.

“On Friday September 1 the NGO World Education/Consortium signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for a sericulture (silk production) project in sixteen villages throughout three districts of Huaphan Province. Designed to build upon the success of previous similar projects, and ongoing efforts to improve sericulture as a viable economic alternative to opium production and or poverty reduction. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of State. The $200,000 budget will cover projected activities for two years; it is anticipated that approximately 320 families will undertake new silk production activities. One of the targeted districts, Xam Tai, has been the largest opium producing district in Huaphan Province.” [speech in En/Lao]
