Ambassador Patricia M. Haslach welcomed a group of U.S. citizens to a Town Hall Meeting at the Embassy’s Consular Section on the evening of Monday, September 18. The new Consular Section Chief, Michael D. Sweeney, presided over a program that featured information about Avian Influenza, Voting Assistance and Security Issues. In addition to introducing many of the new Embassy Officers who have recently arrived in Laos, the Ambassador thanked American citizens who have volunteered to be Embassy wardens and encouraged others to come forward in this important public service. Participants in Monday’s meeting also took the opportunity to register with the Embassy or update their contact information. Consular officers provided a variety of information on how to register to vote by absentee ballot for the upcoming mid-term elections in November. The Embassy’s Public Diplomacy Section Chief gave an informative overview of the efforts to connect Lao and American groups who share common educational and cultural objectives. The Centers of Disease Control’s Country Representative, Dr. Andrew Corwin, also gave an update on the Avian Influenza situation in Laos. |Sept. 18, 2006|
