Lao-American Reading Center in Luang Prabang. Official opened in April 4, 2006 |
US Ambassador Patricia Haslach and Public Affairs Officer Amy Archibald visited the Lao - American Reading Center at the Luang Prabang Public Library on September 11. The Ambassador met with Mr. Phonesay Inthachak, the Director of the Luang Prabang Public Library, and took a short tour of the Library’s collection of both English and Lao publications.
The Lao - American Reading Center, located inside the Public Library in Luang Prabang, opened in April 2006 as part of an ongoing effort to bring information and research materials to Lao students and the general public interested in learning about the United States and the English language. Although the U.S. Embassy has sponsored a Center in Vientiane for a number of years, located on the campus of the Lao-American College, the Luang Prabang Library is the first institution outside the capital to host a similar venture. The Reading Center has information on issues of global interest such as narcotics trafficking, protection of the environment, and international trade. Books, magazines, newspapers, and DVDs are available to Library patrons interested in improving their language skills and learning about the American people, society, values, literature, arts, sports, history and government, or who just want to sit and read a good book. We hope to expand the Library’s collection of materials for young readers soon.“ |Sept. 10, 2006|
