Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Shaun Donnelly visited Laos September 30-October 1 for discussions with senior Lao Government officials on economic issues of interest to both countries.

During his two-day visit to Vientiane, Mr. Donnelly met H.E. Mr. Soulivong Daravong, Minister of Commerce; H.E. Mr. Oneneua Phommachanh, Minister of Industry and Handicraft; and H.E. Mr. Dr. Bountiem Phissamay, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office. In their discussions, the officials discussed economic development and issues affecting the bilateral relationship, including ways to promote American trade and investment in Laos. They also discussed steps that Laos can take to prepare to implement the Bilateral Trade Agreement signed last year and to enhance prospects for passage of Normal Trade Relations by the U.S. Congress.

Discussions also touched on areas in which the two countries have good cooperation, such as the search for the Americans missing in action in Laos since the Indochina War, counter narcotics efforts, and judicial reform, as well as on areas in which the United States would like to see changes in Laos, such as human rights.

This was Mr. Donnelly’s first trip to Laos. His visit to the region also included stops in Vietnam and Cambodia.
