Embassy Provides Free Library Software and Training To Lao Librarians (Nov. 18, 2004)

The U.S. Embassy, Vientiane, in cooperation with the National Library of Laos, provided free library management software and organized a week-long workshop in how to use it November 15-18. The training was to over 30 Lao librarians from the National Library, the Institute of Foreign Affairs, the National Assembly, the Central Library of the National University of Laos, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Engineering, NOSPRA, STEA, and the library in Luang Prabang.

The training was conducted by Dr. Devage Dona Deepali Talagala, President of the Sri Lanka Library Association. Funding for the free software and for Dr. Talagala’s participation was provided by the UNESCO office in Bangkok.

Welcoming remarks at the Opening Ceremony for the Workshop were given by James A. Warren, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy, Vientiane, and Ms. Kongdeuane Nettavong, Director, National Library of Laos. The Ceremony and the training took place at the Computer Training Center of the Science, Technology and Environment Agency (STEA), Office of the Prime Minister.
