Assistant Secretary of State Turner Discusses Environmental Issues With Lao Officials (Nov. 17, 2004)

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs John F. Turner visited Laos November 14-17 for discussions with senior Lao Government officials on environmental issues of interest to both countries.
During his three-day visit to Vientiane, Mr. Turner met Deputy Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith; Minister of Commerce Mr. Soulivong Daravong; Dr. Bountiem Phissamay, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and Head of the Science, Technology and Environment Agency (STEA); and Vice Foreign Minister Phongsavath Boupha. Discussion with these officials focused on environmental issues, including the Nam Thuen II dam, deforestation, and the benefits of conservation of Laos’ forests.
Mr. Turner He also met the Directors of the Mekong River Commission for discussions on the Nam Theun II dam and water management issues.
This was Mr. Turner’s first trip to Laos. His visit to the region also included stops in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.
