General John Allen Discusses Regional Security Issues With Senior Lao Officials (May 18, 2005)

Brigadier General John R. Allen visited Laos May 18-20 to discuss regional security issues with senior Lao officials and to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum Security Policy Conference. General Allen is the Principal Director for Asian and Pacific Affairs, International Security Affairs, Office of the Secretary of Defense.

In his calls on Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, and on Vice Minister of Defense Lt. General Ai Souliyaseng, General Allen thanked the Lao government for its support in the search for the remains of Americans missing since the War. They also discussed the terrorist threat to peace in the ASEAN region, human rights in Laos, and U.S.-Lao cooperation in the areas of trade and investment.

At the ASEAN Regional Forum meetings, General Allen presented the U.S. views on regional security issues, including those involving non-traditional security issues that might destabilize peace and security in the region.
