The Embassy’s Public Affairs Section (PAS), working with the Lao National University Faculty of Law, organized a four-week course on International Agreements and Covenants to increase Lao knowledge of the practice of international law between countries.
Professor John Cerone, Assistant Professor of International Law, and Director, Center for International Law and Policy, designed the course to give the 25 participants -- University professors, Ministry officials, and advanced students -- knowledge of various treaties and agreements, and the duties that signatories to those agreements have to change domestic laws to bring them into compliance with those agreements.
The course, which consists of lectures, case studies, discussions, role-playing, and simulation exercises, will examine such agreements as the UN Declaration on Human Rights the Agreement on International Criminal Courts, and the U.S.-Lao Bilateral Trade Agreement.
