More than two thousand happy runners and walkers participated in the second annual Run Against Drugs on the morning of Saturday, March 13. The Run began at the National Stadium at 7:00 a.m. Participants could choose to run either 10 kilometers or 5 kilometers.

This event was organized by the American Embassy and the City of Vientiane to promote healthy activities and to publicize the dangers of using illegal drugs. The Run was preceded by an opening ceremony that was presided over by HE Deputy Mayor Bounchan Sinthavong and Ambassador Douglas A. Hartwick. The pre-Run festivities also included a performance by pop entertainment with an anti-drug theme.

A Lucky Draw was held after the Run. Over 20 prizes were awarded, including a Kolao motorbike, donated by Kolao Developing Company; two round trip tickets to Bangkok, donated by Lao Airways; and a helicopter ride donated by Lao Westcoast Helicopters.

Runners competed in six categories: men: 17 years old and under, 18-40, and 41 and up; and women: 17 and under, 18-40, and 41 and up. The top three winners in each category were awarded trophies.
