On the afternoon of June 24, 2005, U.S. Ambassador Patricia Haslach hosted a National Day Reception at her residence to commemorate America's 229th Independence Day. Lao government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and other expatriates living in Vientiane attended the event. During the reception, Ambassador Haslach's remarks noted the many ways the governments and the people of the United States and Lao PDR have grown closer during the past year.

After the speech, attendees listened to both the Lao and American national anthems. The Ambassador was joined for a toast by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Somsavat Lengsavad and then proceeded to cut a cake decorated with the American flag. The reception menu consisted of specialties from different U.S. states, including salmon on dark bread from the Ambassador's home state of Oregon.
