Lao American Project (LAP) Field Advisor Martin Newport and representatives of the LAP and district officers from Viengkham, Luang Prabang province met to open a local tender for a three room primary school building for Houaychor village

On June 17, 2005, Lao American Project (LAP) Field Advisor Martin Newport and representatives of the LAP and district officers from Viengkham, Luang Prabang province met to open a local tender for a three room primary school building for Houaychor village. The school will be built on the site of the old temporary bamboo walls and roof structure. The Hmong village has over 200 school age children. Results of the village's 2004 Preliminary Rural Appraisal survey revealed that raising the education standard is among the highest priorities.

The school will provide a permanent structure for the teachers and students. This will save everyone the time and labor required every year to rebuild their temporary school. Part of the construction costs are contributed by the village, such as labor and wood for furniture and formwork. There have been two earlier tenders for schools in Ngoy district target villages; one more is planned for this year. In addition to school construction, the LAP also supports teacher training and school materials.
