 |
Public Affairs Officer James Warren and the eight scholarship recipients at the Farewell Reception at the American Center, Lao-American College. |
The U.S. Embassy organized a farewell reception to say goodbye and good luck to the seven Fulbright Scholars and one Humphrey Fellow who will leave soon to continue their studies in the United States. The Fulbright Scholars will pursue a Master’s Degree through two years of study, while the Humphrey Fellow will engage in a ten-month non-degree professional training. To qualify for these scholarships, candidates had to pass several tests, including the TOEFL English language test, and an interview conducted by a Panel of 5 Lao and American judges. In addition to high academic qualifications, the scholars also had to impress the judges with their ability to interact will with other people, their openness to new experiences, and their ability to establish cross cultural relationships, both personal and professional. The Fulbright and Humphrey programs were established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Applications are now being accepted for next year’s programs. Applications can be picked up from the guard station at the U.S. Embassy; June 30 is the deadline for submitting them.
The Farewell Reception was preceded by a Pre-Departure Orientation Session to help prepare the Scholars and Fellow for life and study in the United States. The program included presentations by five alumni of the Fulbright and Humphrey programs, who offered advice and guidance to their outgoing colleagues.
