On February 10 and 11, Ambassador Haslach held a seminar for Lao businessman and provincial officials in Champassak and Savannakhet provinces to discuss the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in the wake of Congress' recent granting of Normal Trade Relations (NTR). At both seminars, business and government officials expressed interest in learning more about exporting their goods to the United States.
The Ambassador also discussed NTR with both province's governors. The Ambassador told officials that the potential for export growth is strong, especially for textiles and coffee (grown in Champassak). The Ambassador cautioned the officials that "NTR is an opportunity, not a gift. Exporters will have to work hard to break into the U.S. market." A good first target could be the 500,000 person strong Lao-American community in the United States, as well as other significant Lao communities in Australia and France.
The Ambassador said that the embassy can (1) promote understanding of the BTA; (2) assist with information about the U.S. market; (3) encourage partnerships; and help the GOL with programs to support the rule of law. The embassy will continue its outreach for NTR in the coming weeks. The next seminar is planned for Khammouan and Bolikhamsay provinces.
