Participants in panel discussions
Speaker Justin Hughes substantially increased Lao understanding of the importance of protecting intellectual property

In a busy week (Dec. 8-12) of Roundtable Discussions, lectures, and other events, U.S. Speaker Justin Hughes substantially increased Lao understanding of the importance of protecting intellectual property and of how to do so. Speaking in phrases that were easily translatable and understood and in a manner that set audiences at ease, Hughes provided 30 Lao officials with advice on its new draft IPR legislation and guidance on how to proceed in gaining official and public acceptance of it. He also explained to 60 Lao weavers, artisans, and other producers of intellectual property exactly what can be copyrighted and how to do so, and he gave over 100 Lao students and the general public a clear and convincing explanation of how and why protection of intellectual property is essential for the development and prosperity of the Lao economy.
