U.S. Embassy Congratulates Magsaysay Winner Sombath Somphone

The U.S. Embassy is pleased to congratulate Mr. Sombath Somphone, winner of the 2005 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership. Mr. Somphone, who is Executive Director of the Participatory Development Training Center (PADETC), received this award from the Magsaysay Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, based in The Philippines, for his work to provide training young people in Laos and for motivating them to develop themselves to the fullest extent possible.
To congratulate Mr. Somphone, the U.S. Embassy has donated a professional broadcast quality microphone, valued at $895 to the Participatory Development Training Center for use in its programs to conduct media training workshops for Lao youths and young adults. The microphone is used for studio and location professional television productions.
The microphone was presented to Mr. Somphone by Dr. Robert Hooper, Professor of Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding, California State University, Dominguez Hills, who is in Laos as a Senior Fulbright Specialist, working with PADETC to conduct training programs for professors at the National University of Laos and to help the University launch the new Department of Mass Communications.
