Anti-Narcotics Radio Drama Project Off to A Good Start (Aug. 10, 2004)

NAS Director Dave Wise attended the closing ceremony of the program in Luang Prabang.

The demand reduction project Radio-Assisted Drug Abuse Prevention Among Highland Youth is well underway. This project will result in the production of two anti-drug radio dramas to be used among mainly ethnic minority youth in Luang Prabang province. The dramas will be produced not only in Lao, but also in the predominant regional languages, Hmong and Khamu. The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Embassy’s Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS), and implemented by a Washington, D.C. non-profit organization, Educational Development Center, and the Luang Prabang provincial office of Information and Culture’s Youth Division.

One of the projects programs, a workshop focused on planning and writing scripts highlighting the dangers of the use of illegal narcotics concluded on August 10. NAS Director Dave Wise attended the closing ceremony of the program in Luang Prabang, as shown in the above photograph.

Upcoming events will include several “camping” sessions in the three participating districts (Nambak, Chomphet, and Luang Prabang), which will include presenting the two radio programs, puppet shows, and sports activities. Based on villages’ feedback, scripts will be modified before they are broadcast over the recently upgraded provincial radio station.
