U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State (DAS) Eric John visited the new Lao-American Center in Luang Prabang on April 27. The Center, located inside the city’s public library where it can be easily visited often by students and the general public, contains almost 1,000 books and periodicals useful in helping students and the general public in Luang Prabang improve their English reading abilities. The Center also has many publications with information about international issues important to ASEAN countries, such as protection of the environment, trafficking in people and narcotics, and democracy and human rights. The Center opened on April 4 at a reception hosted by Luang Prabang Vice Governor Khampheng Xaysompheng and the U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer James Warren.

DAS Eric John visited Laos April 25-28 to attend the U.S.-ASEAN Enhanced Partnership meeting in Vientiane. DAS John also visited the Lao National Museum in Luang Prabang, where he viewed the many important historical artifacts in the Museum and learned more about the Museum’s plans to preserve and expand its collection.|April 27, 2006|
