Ambassador Ravic Huso Lao TESOL
Monday, January 28, 9:00 AM
National University of Laos

Good morning,
Madame Vice Minister, Dr. Bouasavanh, Distinguished Guests, and Honored Teachers.

I am very pleased to welcome you to the 6th annual Lao TESOL conference. All of you here today recognize the importance of the ability to read and to speak English in today’s world.

In today’s globalized world, English has become the essential language. Although many other languages are widely spoken --Spanish, or Chinese,--for example --English is increasingly the language --or the link --that facilitates global communication.

English is the language of ASEAN, the language of international trade; and, the first language of the Internet. English is also the primary language for those seeking educational opportunities at colleges and universities outside their own countries.

Most of the world’s people are not born into an English-speaking culture or country.  For that reason, they will need to learn English as a second --or even third --or fourth -- language. A few people are gifted or talented enough to learn English on their own. But for the vast majority, well-trained teachers of English as a second language are critical to success in learning English.

I am very pleased that the American Embassy is able to support Lao Teachers of English as a Second Language. in particular by helping to bring many Lao teachers from outside Vientiane to this Conference.

I applaud all of you who have chosen to become English teachers. My wife is a TESOL who has taught in many countries in Africa and Asia. And my mother taught foreign languages for over 50 years before fully retiring at the age of 82. So, I know a bit about the challenges you face in bringing out the best in your students.

I hope that this Conference will give you not only the materials you may need, but also new ideas and techniques to encourage your students and help them be successful language-learners. Your active participation in these workshops will make the most of this opportunity. And what you gain will in turn help you to inspire your students.

I want to thank the National University of Laos, our hosts
and the organizers of this conference, for making this training and sharing of ideas possible, and Denley Pike of Vientiane College, for his support and assistance.

Finally, I want to thank the Ministry of Education
for sponsoring this important event.

I wish every participant success in your efforts
to improve the level of English instruction in Laos --a key to the future development and prosperity of the Lao PDR and the Lao people.
