A is for Aloha!  Reading to Kids in Luang Prabang

Mrs. Barbara Huso, center, and Ambassador Ravic Huso, left, with local students and library staff in Luang Prabang.

Mrs. Barbara Huso, wife of U.S. Ambassador to Laos Ravic R. Huso, visited the Lao American Reading Center in Luang Prabang on September 12 to read to a group of students from the local lower secondary school about her home state of Hawai’i. Children from age 10-14 listened to the book “A is for Aloha, A Hawai’i Alphabet” by native Hawaiians U’ilani Goldsberry and Tammy Yee. The author takes each letter of the alphabet and discusses some aspect of culture, geography, or wildlife in Hawaii. Notes in the margins for older readers add additional information about the only U.S. island state. These students were surprised to see pictures of rice fields and tropical scenes that reminded them of Laos.

The Lao American Reading Center is open to visitors of all ages at the Luang Prabang Library. Membership is not required.
