The Honorable Judge Arterton speaks at the Ministry of Justice, accompanied by interpreter Mr. Viengsavanh Phanthaly.

The Honorable Janet Bond Arterton, federal judge for the United States District Court of Connecticut, visited Laos August 27-29th to conduct workshops on the rule of law and judicial administration. Judge Arterton spoke to audiences at the Ministry of Justice, Lao Bar Association, and Faculty of Law and Political Science. The lectures and discussions covered a wide range of legal and judicial issues, including how the U.S. legal system manages cases to ensure judgments are issued quickly and fairly, the role of judges and how they are selected, and how to create greater transparency within the judicial process.

Judge Arterton serves on the United States Judicial Conference Committee on International Judicial Relations, on which she is the designated liaison for judicial education and observation programs. Judge Arterton regularly speaks on judicial independence, court administration, rule of law, federal trial practice and procedures, court-annexed mediation and various substantive areas of law. She hosts international judges, coordinates judicial observation programs, and has participated in many other judicial development projects, including programs in Kosovo, St. Lucia, Cambodia, Suriname, and Vietnam.
