Beginning with his great 1995 solo debut, Raisin' Cain, Jesse Dayton has established himself as one uncompromisingly individualistic hellcat. Country Soul Brother offers the latest proof that this Gulf Coast native should be a lot bigger than he is.
The stylishly rough-edged singer and songwriter blends youthful rocking swagger with old-soul, honky-tonk character, which adds to the power of numbers such as the bright, catchy" Ain't Grace Amazing" and the mournful "Daily Ritual."
The title of the album hints at just some of the genre-busting going on here, as Dayton offers turbocharged twang, horn-kissed soul, accordion-fueled Tex-Mex, and a rousing touch of gospel. Like Dwight Yoakam, he can also take a pop song -here it's the Cars' "Just What I Needed" -and transform it into something thoroughly his own: a steel-laced country shuffle.
