Fulbright Scholarships

Fulbright Scholarships will be awarded under the J. William Fulbright Program for study in a two-year Master’s Degree program during the 2012 – 2014 academic years (July 2012 – June 2014).  Individuals from both the public and the private sectors may apply.  Female, minority and candidates from outside Vientiane are encouraged to apply. 

In addition to the two-year Master’s Degree program, the U.S. Embassy is accepting applications for the 2012 Fulbright PhD Science and Technology Program.  This scholarship, for the academic year 2012-2015, is for Ph.D. study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering. The scholarship is among the most prestigious international scholarships in science and technology.

The Fulbright Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1946 to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.  Fulbright grants will be awarded for graduate study at the master’s degree level in all fields of study except medicine.  (Applications will be accepted in public health.)

Eligibility:

• Applicant must be a Lao citizen.
• Applicant must be age 40 or under. 
• Applicant must hold at least a bachelor’s degree with at least four years of full-time study, a superior academic record, and qualify for admission to U.S. programs of graduate study.
• Applicant for the Humphrey Fellowship must have at least five years of working experience.
• Applicant for both Fulbright and Humphrey must enclose a current CV or resume.
• Proficiency in the English language is measured by a minimum TOEFL score of 80 internet-based, or 6,5 IELTS for the Fulbright Master study program; 96 internet based or 7,5 IELTS for the Fulbright PhD study program and a minimum TOEFL score of 71 internet-based, or 5,5 IELTS for Humphrey Fellows.  Then first English screening test will be held in February 26-27, 2011 at Lao American Center which is located at Lao American College in Vientinae.

• Applicants must include a one-page essay, 500 words maximum, on “Why you want to study in the United States.”
• The appointment for the English screening tests for selected applicants will be made for eligible applicants with no TOEFL or IELTS scores at the time the completed application is submitted. Eligible applicants with the required minimum TOEFL/IELTS scores can submit their scores with their completed registration forms and supporting documents.

• The closing date for registration forms, essays, and test scores is Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. The complete application must be submitted in person to the Public Diplomacy Office, U.S. Embassy, Rue Bartholonie, (That Dam), Vientiane capital.
