Following the worst flooding in Laos in decades, Embassy Vientiane staff members volunteered to take part in the flood relief effort organized by the Lao government. Charge d’Affaires Mary Grace McGeehan and other members of the Embassy’s American and Lao staff were assigned to fill sandbags along Thadeua Road in Vientiane in order to prevent flood waters from rising further. While they were working, the Deputy Mayor of Vientiane stopped by to thank them and other workers for their efforts. The volunteers were impressed by how well-organized the flood relief operation was and by the camaraderie and good spirits of the thousands of Vientiane residents who volunteered their time for this important effort.
