The U.S. Government provided grant assistance totaling $1 million to the Government of Laos to continue strengthening its technical capacity to combat avian influenza (AI). The grant will help protect the health of poultry and thus the health of the people, particularly chicken farmers in remote areas. These funds will be expended in 23 districts of four provinces that are most at risk of the AI disease. The donation ceremony took place at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) in Vientiane. Signing the grant documents were Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Representative Dr. Leena Kirjavainen and MAF Livestock and Fishery Department Director Bounkuang Khambounheung. Attending for the Embassy was Infectious Disease Coordinator/Al Coordinator Dr. Andrew Corwin on behalf of the US Ambassador, Patricia Haslach.
