U.S. Donates Ventilator for Avian Influenza Treatment

Ambassador Huso, Japanese Ambassador Masaaki Miyashita, Minister of Health Ponmek Dalaloy, Indian Ambassador Suresh Goel, and WHO Representative Dong Il Anh participate in the donation handover.

At a ceremony at the Ministry of Health on January 14, Ambassador Huso donated a ventilator, a portable X-ray unit, and other equipment and supplies for the treatment of avian influenza patients at the Friendship Hospital in Vientiane. This donation, along with U.S. government-funded training on use of the equipment, will make possible the establishment of the Vientiane’s first isolation ward with Intensive Care Unit capacity. The equipment and training has a total value of more than $200,000. It is part of a program, funded by USAID and the Centers for Disease Control, that has to date contributed over $7 million dollars to combat avian influenza and other infectious diseases. At the ceremony, the Ambassadors of Japan and India donated equipment for ICU units in isolation wards at hospitals in other parts of Laos.
